Reality shows have become the normal thing for the modern day and age. Turn on a television and on just about every channel, there is a show that has definite reality-themes or is completely reality based. Sometimes, I personally consider them like train wrecks. They could be the most horrible, annoying, strange, bizarre things you’ve ever seen, and yet you simply cannot look away. They’re just too interesting.

But why is it that the reality of someone else’s life has suddenly become more interesting than our own? Why do we ignore things in our lives just to pay attention to the life of another? There could be several causes to this sensation and phenomenon. We could idolize the person and the reality they have. We could be interested in their specific job or hobbies. We could enjoy seeing them fail at something out of their league to make ourselves feel better. But all of these reasons are sparked from one specific source: their lives have become more interesting or better than our own.

When surrounded by things that we consider ‘average’ or ‘dull’ or ‘boring’ or ‘unexpectedly dull and boring’ or any of those things, it’s no surprise that we long to get involved in a world that isn’t ours. We want to get involved in a life we weren’t born in or don’t have to deal with. Sometimes we also like to get away from our own lives if they’re troublesome or annoying. In certain reality shows, we want to place ourselves in a situation that is somewhat foreign but more interesting and distracting in a way that we want. We want to get angry or frustrated or passionate about things when there’s nothing worth getting passionate over in our own day-to-day schedules. Reality shows are our own way of trying to make our own lives better, even if it’s mostly pretend or over something that never had anything to do with us in the first place.

We have become the race of peeping Toms. We love to poke our eyes into something unknown or interesting to us, and what other reason would we do it for? Are we bored? Are we sad? Are we feeling alone? All of these sub reasons can be derived from one simple statement: These realities have caught our eye more than our own reality. Is it a bad thing? Well, that is up for debate for anyone and their own opinion.

I watched Pink Floyd The Wall on Friday. Dear god this movie is amazing. This part was one of the most gorgeous and somewhat disturbing animations I’ve ever seen. I was so amazed. I love it.
